Born in Berlin in 1975, Martin Schirmbacher first left the city for a year of high school in Lansing, Michigan. He completed his studies and legal clerkship in Berlin and London. Schirmbacher started working for HÄRTING Rechtsanwälte as a student in his third semester. Before his legal clerkship, he completed his doctorate in Erlangen with funding from the German Research Foundation. Martin has been a lawyer and partner at HÄRTING since 2005. Since then, he has helped to build up the IT and data protection department. He has also been a specialist lawyer for IT law since 2008 and was recognised as Lawyer of the Year in the Best Lawyers Ranking in 2020 and 2025. He has received further awards for his expertise in technology law and data protection law, where he has been consistently listed as Best Lawyer Germany since 2012.
