This law supplements, extends and changes various regulations in Germany on consumer protection regulations in data protection law. In addition to occasional amendments to the Civil Code, such as in the regulations on the general terms and conditions, and the law against unfair competition, the Act mainly includes amendments to the Injunctive Relief Act.

These changes concern in particular an extension of the watchdog powers of consumer protection associations to privacy violations. If companies breach data protection law and at the same time the rights of consumers, consumer protection associations can take action against these companies as from 24 February 2016 within the framework of injunction suits. Typical examples of the scope of such an injunction suit are found in the areas of inappropriate data processing, disclosure of personal data, as well as certain advertisements.
