With the total revision of the DPA, the Federal Council wishes to strengthen data protection in Switzerland and adapt it to changing technological and social conditions. However, there is also pressure from the EU to ensure that Switzerland continues to be recognised as a third country with an adequate level of data protection.

On 12 June 2018, the National Council voted in favour of a revision in two stages, which is why the treatment of the actual revision of the DPA was delayed. The Commission’s original goal of completing the handling of the bill in the winter session was missed. Even the second objective of the consultation in the current summer session could not be achieved. In the Commission’s media release of 24 May 2019, it is now assumed that the proposal will be discussed for the first time in the autumn session of the National Council.
